High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?
Recognising potential and developing talent
Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.
Tailored lessons
Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.
Rich opportunities and activities
Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.
Opening doors to wider experiences
Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.
What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Lavington East, every child’s potential matters.
Our teachers design lessons that stretch and challenge every learner — including those showing high potential — through explicit teaching, flexible grouping, and differentiated tasks. Students are encouraged to think deeply, solve problems creatively, and make meaningful connections between ideas.
We use goal setting and growth-focused feedback to help students understand their strengths and next steps. Those who show advanced skills may access extension or accelerated learning opportunities or leadership roles.
In creative and physical domains, students can shine through school choir, performances, sports programs, and student leadership. Above all, our classrooms are safe, inclusive environments where students are encouraged to take risks in their learning, stay curious, and develop resilience — essential qualities for turning potential into achievement.
Across Lavington East, we nurture a culture of high expectations and equity in excellence. We recognise and celebrate talent across all four domains — intellectual, creative, physical, and social-emotional — and provide opportunities for students to explore their passions.
Students can take part in:
- Creative arts programs such as choir, visual arts showcases, and competitions
- Sporting pathways through PSSA, athletics, and representative sport
- Student leadership opportunities, including the Student Representative Council, Aboriginal Dreamtime Team, peer mentoring, and student ambassador programs
Our Learning and Support Team works closely with teachers to identify and nurture high potential from an early stage using data, observation, and assessment. Staff engage in ongoing professional learning through AERO and HPGE frameworks, ensuring they have the expertise to recognise and develop student talent.
We also work in partnership with Aurora College, providing our high-potential students with opportunities to engage in virtual enrichment programs and connect with specialist teachers across NSW. In addition, our partnerships with local high schools ensure smooth transitions, early talent development, and access to leadership and curriculum-specific experiences.
At LEPS, families are essential partners in this process. Together, we create the conditions for students to discover what inspires them and pursue it with confidence.
As a proud regional NSW public school, Lavington East ensures that our students have access to the same high-quality learning opportunities as any student across the state.
Our students participate in state-wide enrichment programs, including:
- Premier’s Spelling Bee and Premier’s Debating Challenge
- PSSA representative sport and the Premier’s Sporting Challenge
- Aurora College online enrichment for students with advanced academic potential
We also collaborate with neighbouring schools through the Albury-Hume principal network to share expertise, co-deliver enrichment programs, and provide access to virtual learning experiences and industry mentors.
By working together — locally and across the state — we make sure that distance never limits opportunity. Every Lavington East student can discover their strengths, stretch their thinking, and thrive on a pathway that supports their unique potential.
